World Aquatics has announced the inaugural Water Polo 4x4 Open Championships will take place in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from 31 August to 6 September 2026. This event will introduce the four-by-four water polo format on a global stage.

The Water Polo 4x4 discipline features teams of four players, a smaller field of play, and a shorter shot clock, making for a faster and more dynamic game. The format is designed for adaptation to both open water and urban settings, aiming to broaden the sport’s reach and audience.

Dubrovnik was chosen as the host due to its strong tradition in open-water water polo, including the annual Wild League, which concludes in the Old Town harbour. This highlights the blend of tradition and innovation the new format represents.

World Aquatics describes Water Polo 4x4 as a distinct discipline that complements traditional water polo. The organisation envisions this format energizing urban pools and waterfront arenas worldwide, creating new opportunities for athletes, federations, and event organisers. The goal is to draw new generations of fans and players, inspire communities, and grow the sport globally.
