The World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26 will feature top teenage distance runners competing in eight events from 5 to 9 August at Hayward Field. The women's 800m field is led by Slovenia’s Živa Remic, who holds the national U18 record at 1:59.64 and recently won the European U18 title. Remic joins the field following the withdrawal of British Olympian Phoebe Gill due to injury. Other leading competitors include Ethiopia’s Habtam Gebeyehu, Kenya’s Nancy Jepngetich, Morocco’s Saida El-Bouzy, and US athlete Paige Sheppard, all of whom have run under 2:01 this season.
In the men’s 800m, Australia’s Daniel Williams tops the entry list with a personal best of 1:44.37, set at the Adelaide Invitational. Williams, with previous experience at Hayward Field, could have an advantage. Morocco’s Imad Bouchajda, with a 1:44.38 PB, will also compete in the 1500m. Kenyan Nashon Pkiach, racing outside Kenya for the first time after winning national trials in 1:46.17, joins Slovenia’s Benjamin Lakošeljac and US U20 champion Stefon Dodoo, all sharing the same season best time.
The women’s 1500m brings together four 17-year-olds: Haregeweyni Kalayu and Elsabet Amare of Ethiopia, Kenya’s Caren Chepchirchir, and US runner Ellery Lincoln. Kalayu leads with the fastest PB of 3:59.28, set at a Diamond League meet in Rabat in May.
