Olympic bronze medallist and former world indoor mile record-holder Yared Nuguse headlines the men’s road mile at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. Nuguse transitions to road racing just six days after placing fifth in the 1500m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest. He recently won the US road mile title in Des Moines with a time of 3:54.06. On the track this year, Nuguse ran a 3:45.69 mile in London, finishing second to Josh Kerr in a world record-breaking race.
Isaac Nader of Portugal, a world 1500m champion in Tokyo and world indoor silver medallist in 2026, is another major contender. Nader has set national records this season in the 800m, 1500m, and 3000m. Although he finished 12th at the Ultimate Championship, his championship experience and finishing speed make him a significant threat.
Vincent Ciattei has also shown strong form in the road mile, finishing second behind Nuguse at the US Championships and improving his track times this year, with a 1500m best of 3:30.90 and a mile best of 3:48.34.
European athletes Robert Farken, Jake Heyward, and Andrew Coscoran strengthen the field. Farken, sixth in the 1500m at last year’s World Championships, posted personal bests of 3:46.82 for the mile and 3:30.09 for 1500m this season. Heyward set a personal best of 3:46.73 in the mile and narrowly missed podium finishes at the Commonwealth and European Championships. Irishman Coscoran earned European 1500m bronze and has a mile personal best of 3:49.26.
Australia is represented by Oliver Hoare, the 2022 Commonwealth 1500m champion, and Jack Anstey. Hoare finished second to Cameron Myers at the Australian Championships and fifth in the Commonwealth mile in Glasgow. Anstey, who previously competed in the inaugural World Road Running Championships, brings strong recent road experience.
