Olympic sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden founded The Village Initiative Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to supporting underserved communities and providing a central hub for resources. She conceived the idea at the end of her honeymoon and formed a board to help develop the project. While the initial focus was her hometown, the initiative quickly expanded its reach due to Jefferson-Wooden’s connections beyond Georgetown County. The Village Initiative’s programs include 'The Village Gives,' which hosts backpack and holiday drives, and 'The Village Champions,' identifying underprivileged schools needing support. The latter was inspired when Jefferson-Wooden learned her nephew’s football team was required to buy their own cleats. She provided cleats for the entire team and is now seeking sponsors for additional needs such as book bags, sports footwear, or laptops, tailored to each school's requirements.
