Lesotho has launched a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Sport at the National University of Lesotho, aiming to strengthen physical education and develop a skilled sports workforce.
The programme, offered within the Faculty of Education, results from the AUSC Region 5 Sub-Regional Forum on Quality Physical Education held in October 2025, which adopted the Thaba-Bosiu Declaration. This declaration commits Member States to improving teacher preparation, reforming curricula, promoting inclusive participation, and investing in human resource development.
The launch was led by Hon. Stephen Mputi, Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, with officials from the Ministry of Education and Training and the University's Vice Chancellor. The programme is seen as a key investment aligned with Lesotho’s development goals.
By preparing qualified physical education teachers, coaches, and sports professionals, the programme is expected to improve school physical education, encourage healthier lifestyles, enhance social inclusion, promote gender equality, empower youth, and increase employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
The initiative also supports UNESCO’s vision for Quality Physical Education, focusing on inclusive, learner-centred education that fosters physical literacy, confidence, life skills, and lifelong healthy habits.
This launch demonstrates how regional cooperation can drive sustainable national reforms through policy dialogue, partnerships, and capacity building, ensuring regional commitments bring meaningful benefits to learners, educators, and communities in Lesotho.
