Jakob Ingebrigtsen defended his 5000m title at the 2026 European Championships in Birmingham, winning in 13:15.29 despite missing the season due to an Achilles injury and surgery in February. The two-time Olympic champion had only competed outdoors at the World Championships in Tokyo earlier in 2025. During the race, Ingebrigtsen maintained a strategic position and surged ahead in the final stretch to secure his fourth consecutive European 5000m title.

Germany's Florian Bremm took silver with a time of 13:15.60, while Etienne Daguinos claimed bronze in 13:16.09, edging out World 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier. Ingebrigtsen reflected on his recovery, admitting he doubted himself but prepared as well as possible, calling his return "pretty smooth" in the final weeks before the race.

This win brings Ingebrigtsen’s European outdoor title count to seven, with 17 golds overall in track and cross country. Norway soon added a gold in the mixed 4x400m relay, setting a national record of 3:09.62. Henriette Jaeger anchored the team, overtaking rivals in the home stretch for the victory, joined by Karsten Warholm and other strong teammates.

On opening night, Amy Hunt delighted the home crowd by winning the women's 100m event, adding to the host nation’s success.
