The men’s 5000m final at the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest features Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen and world champion Cole Hocker as leading contenders. Ingebrigtsen, an Olympic 5000m and 1500m gold medalist, is returning from Achilles surgery, having captured a European 5000m title and top Diamond League finishes this season. Hocker, the reigning world champion, is competing in the 5000m for the first time this year after focusing on the 1500m.
Both athletes are also entered in the 1500m at the Ultimate Championship. Ingebrigtsen claimed his fourth consecutive European 5000m title in Birmingham and has placed in the top five in three Diamond League meets. Hocker has won in Zurich and was third in Silesia in the 1500m Diamond League, finishing seventh at the Brussels final behind Ingebrigtsen.
In their only previous 5000m meeting last year at the World Championships, Hocker won while Ingebrigtsen finished tenth. This year’s field is strong, with 10 of the 13 fastest men entered. Burundi’s Egide Ntakarutimana leads in season’s bests with a national record of 12:46.73 set at the Diamond League Final. Other top entrants include Cornelius Kemboi, Biniam Mehary, Graham Blanks, Nico Young, Jacob Krop, and Grant Fisher, an Olympic bronze medallist in the 5000m and 10,000m and a Diamond League winner in Paris.
Ethiopia’s Addisu Yihune, the 2022 world U20 champion and Diamond League winner this season, tops the world rankings ahead of Zurich Diamond League 3000m winner Parker Wolfe. Both aim to cap their strong seasons at the Ultimate Championship final in Budapest.
