The 38th European Aquatics Championships featured standout athletes including Leon Marchand, Sarah Sjostrom, Nicolo Martinenghi, and David Popovici, many returning to claim gold medals.
Italian swimmer Sara Curtis, now training in Virginia, USA, set a new 50m Backstroke record, lowering the mark twice and finishing with 26.56 seconds to secure her first major individual title. Curtis also earned bronze in the 50m and 100m Freestyle events and claimed three relay medals, expressing excitement for her future prospects.
German swimmer Johannes Liebmann, who recently broke a world junior record in the 800m, won both the 800m and 1500m freestyle events. He set a championship and European record in the 800m with 7:37.59. Liebmann also achieved a world record in the 1500m freestyle, finishing in 14:26.79 and surpassing Bobby Finke's previous Olympic record by 3.88 seconds.
Two additional world junior records were set: Mikhail Shcherbakov logged 1:56.16 in the Men's 200m Individual Medley to win bronze, and Nathan Muratory posted 1:54.87 in the 200m Backstroke heats, thrilling local fans.
