Just days after setting new world records in Zurich, Alison dos Santos and Masai Russell are set to compete at the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels. Dos Santos recently clocked 45.80 in the 400m hurdles, outpacing his closest rival Matheus Lima by nearly one and a half seconds this year. Russell delivered a remarkable 12.09 in the 100m hurdles, shaving 0.03 seconds off the previous world record, and is now aiming to break the 12-second barrier in Brussels.
Russell will face strong competition from Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, who she displaced as world record holder, as well as world indoor champion Devynne Charlton and Nadine Visser from the Netherlands in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The women’s 800m is another highlight, with world leader Audrey Werro renewing her rivalry with Femke Broeders-Bol. Werro remains the form athlete this season, nearing the 43-year-old world record held by Jarmila Kratochvílová, coming within 0.42 seconds of that mark.
In the sprints, Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo will compete in a strong field that includes the season’s top-ranked Kenney Bednarek of the United States. Tebogo’s best this season is 19.84 seconds, while Bednarek leads with 19.62 seconds. Southern African rivals Sinesipho Dambile (South Africa) and Makanakaishe Charamba (Zimbabwe) also compete in the sprint events.
The women’s 100m features the season's fastest athlete, Sha’Carri Richardson (10.77 seconds), joined by European champion Amy Hunt and Jamaica’s Tina Clayton and Jonielle Smith. Jessica Hull also aims to build on her recent successes, including double medals at the World Indoor Championships and a rise to number one in the world rankings.
The Brussels final concludes the Diamond League season, granting winners automatic qualification for events at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship and the chance to compete for a US$10 million prize at the subsequent showdown.
