Danny Mackey, head coach and manager of the Brooks Beasts Track Club, began his coaching career shaped by his injury experiences and academic background in physiology and biomechanics. Originally aiming to become a college professor and coach, he shifted focus after finding limited university coaching opportunities, eventually working at Nike and Adidas in sports research while simultaneously coaching professional athletes and running for Brooks. He started the Brooks Beasts team nearly 15 years ago, now home to world-class athletes such as three-time world champion Josh Kerr.
From the beginning, Mackey has integrated a scientific perspective into his coaching, exemplified by hiring a physiotherapist as his first staff member rather than an assistant coach. His approach incorporates physiological responses and injury prevention, balanced by a focus on the psychological aspects of performance, such as stress and anxiety management, which he believes contribute to better race outcomes.
While maintaining core coaching principles, Mackey remains open to evolving his training methods to support ongoing athlete improvement. He describes himself as curious, always seeking new ways to enhance speed and performance, reflecting the dynamic nature of the sport. This adaptability is underscored by continuous experimentation within his coaching practice.
