Botswana’s Collen Kebinatshipi won the men's 400m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, clocking 43.39 seconds to set a new national record and rank fifth on the world all-time list.
Kebinatshipi, the 22-year-old Diamond League champion, improved his national record multiple times this season, with performances of 43.54 in Paris, 43.44 in Monaco, and 43.40 in Brussels. In Budapest, he started aggressively and maintained a strong pace to finish ahead of his rivals.
USA’s Rai Benjamin, the world and Olympic 400m hurdles champion, placed second with a time of 44.15 seconds as part of his effort to contest both the 400m and 400m hurdles. Jereem Richards finished third in 44.23 seconds, just 0.08 behind Benjamin.
Kebinatshipi said he aimed not to relax early in the race and wanted to experience the fatigue other athletes often feel in the final metres. He described his finish as "the race of his life," narrowly missing the world lead time of 43.38 seconds set at the NCAA Championships earlier this year.
