Budapest is set to make history as the first city to host the World Aquatics Championships for a third time, following successful editions in 2017 and 2022. The 2027 championships will bring athletes from over 200 countries to compete in all aquatic disciplines in the Hungarian capital, and the event will also serve as an Olympic qualifier, raising the competition stakes.
World Aquatics President Husain Al Musallam emphasized the significance of this milestone, expressing confidence that the 2027 event will surpass previous editions in scale and excitement. He highlighted Budapest's special place in aquatic sports history and its proven track record in hosting major championships.
State Secretary for Sport Attila Kálnoki-Kiss reflected on Budapest's ability to host major sporting events, citing the successes of the 2017 and 2022 championships. He also mentioned the event's inspirational impact, giving the example of Hubert Kós, who as a young spectator in 2017 went on to become a prominent Hungarian aquatics athlete.
Brent Nowicki, Executive Director of World Aquatics, spoke at the unveiling of the Budapest 2027 Championships logo, praising the city's strong venues, passionate fans, and unique atmosphere. He also noted the transition of World Aquatics’ headquarters to Budapest, the strengthening partnership with the city, and athletes’ enthusiasm for competing there.
Sándor Wladár, Co-Chair of the Organising Committee and President of the Hungarian Swimming Federation, emphasized the opportunity for the championships to inspire future generations, building on Hungary’s recent successes in swimming.
