St Nicholas School is one of three pilot schools for a new STEM education initiative in the Solomon Islands, providing students opportunities to be recognized as innovators and contributors to national development despite challenges in accessing STEM education. Student teams participated in hands-on activities aligned with the project’s goals of promoting gender transformation and inclusivity by encouraging both girls and boys to collaborate and challenge stereotypes.

Dr Franco Rodie, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), emphasized that STEM education is a critical driver of the modern economy, stating it is now essential for progress. The launch event featured remarks from education leaders and partners highlighting STEM’s role in equipping young people with skills for innovation and economic growth.

The initiative is significantly supported by China, with Gu Wenlong, Head of Political Section at the Chinese Embassy, noting that education not only shapes the future of Solomon Islands but also strengthens ties between the two countries. UNESCO’s National Project Officer, Berris Olitisa, described the project as fostering a generation of problem solvers who can contribute to a more innovative and resilient future, as evident in the students’ enthusiastic participation during the event.
