The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) removed a cobalt-60 source in Guatemala to enhance both U.S. and global radiological security. The cobalt-60, once used in a disused teletherapy machine originating from the United States, is highly radioactive and could be misused in a "dirty bomb." The removal operation occurred in May, with the radioactive source transported to secure storage in the United States using a Type B package designed for such materials.
Guatemalan representatives from the National Centre of Radioactive Wastes and the Ministry of Energy and Mines provided critical transportation, logistical, and security support. Mayra Villatoro, Head of Unit of Technical Laboratories at Guatemala's Ministry of Energy and Mines, said the collaboration eliminated the risk the material posed to the community and country.
NNSA’s Deputy Administrator for the Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, Matthew Napoli, highlighted the mission to protect American citizens, secure borders, and prevent adversaries from accessing dangerous materials. Robert Bridges, DTRA Program Manager for Nuclear Transportation & Disposition, noted that the successful repatriation reflects key interagency cooperation and supports efforts to reduce radiological risks.
This operation supports the 2026 Counterterrorism Strategy under the Trump Administration, which stresses preventing terrorists from acquiring chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear materials as a critical security priority. The effort demonstrates international partnership and a commitment to reducing nuclear and radiological risks.
