Marking the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has launched a global campaign called The Promise, aimed at renewing commitments to protect refugees worldwide. The initiative seeks to mobilize governments, organizations, and individuals ahead of the Global Refugee Forum in 2027.
The campaign comes as more than 41 million people remain displaced globally due to ongoing conflicts that continue to challenge asylum systems and host countries. UNHCR highlights the importance of supporting host nations, expanding opportunities for refugees, and creating conditions for voluntary return and lasting solutions to displacement.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih emphasized the collective responsibility to uphold the promise made seventy-five years ago to protect those forced to flee. A broad coalition supports this initiative, including actor-humanitarians such as Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Ben Stiller, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, alongside refugee leaders, business figures, faith leaders, and human rights advocates.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that fulfilling this promise depends on sustained international cooperation, responsibility-sharing, and support for countries and communities with limited resources that host many refugees.
