Russian ballistic missile strikes killed 17 people and injured more than 40 in Kyiv, Ukraine. The most severe damage occurred in the Solomianskyi district, where a nine-story apartment building caught fire, resulting in seven deaths. The attacks also damaged about 20 residential buildings, a school, a children's hospital, and a kindergarten. The mayor of Kyiv declared a day of mourning. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attacks and called for urgent de-escalation and an immediate ceasefire, emphasizing that attacks on civilians and infrastructure violate international humanitarian law.

After the missile strikes, Ukrainian forces launched drone attacks inside Russian territory. Russian air defenses intercepted and destroyed 726 drones over mainland Russia, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov. Russian media reported civilian injuries in the Ulyanovsk and Belgorod regions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy partly attributed civilian casualties to insufficient air defense missile supplies from allied countries.

According to UN monitors, 1,396 Ukrainian civilians were confirmed killed and 7,978 injured in the first six months of 2026, with July as the deadliest month for civilians since April 2022. UN humanitarian agencies responded to the recent attacks by providing first aid, psychological support, hot meals, construction materials, and cash assistance to affected residents in Kyiv. UN relief chief Tom Fletcher, present in Kyiv, observed the aftermath and highlighted the scale of the damage.
