The Office of Management and Budget has released a policy mandating the use of Login.gov for most public-facing federal services, marking a step toward universal sign-on across government platforms. This initiative aims to improve service delivery and user experience for Americans interacting with government online.
Currently, many users engage with multiple public services requiring repeated identity verification and multiple usernames and passwords, even within the same agency. The implementation of Login.gov is intended to eliminate these redundancies by allowing users to reuse their information across services. Nearly two-thirds of Americans surveyed expressed frustration with repetitive information requests.
Login.gov is a government-operated identity platform that promotes public trust by ensuring users remain within the .gov domain while accessing services. The platform's enhanced sign-on experience is expected to encourage broader adoption of digital services, matching the public's preference for digital access similar to commercial brands.
The policy also seeks cost savings by reducing duplicative identity verification. By consolidating identity management through Login.gov, the government can minimize repeated verification of individuals and reduce dependence on commercial vendors where government-maintained identity sources are available.
