The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, welcomed an initial memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran aimed at ending conflicts and addressing nuclear verification challenges. He emphasized the IAEA’s essential role as a positive foundation for the upcoming technical discussions.

The memorandum allows up to 60 days of negotiations to finalize an agreement on uranium enrichment levels in Iran, reaffirms Iran’s stated intention not to develop nuclear weapons, reopens the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping, and eases sanctions imposed by the US and the UN Security Council. It also calls for the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.

Mr. Grossi stated that negotiations will be conducted in good faith without speculation on potential spoilers. He indicated that multiple options regarding uranium enrichment levels within Iran’s existing stockpile may be considered as talks progress.

Regarding IAEA access to Iran’s nuclear facilities, he acknowledged that access is currently limited, but contact with Iranian authorities continues, and the agency has identified specific sites requiring access. He affirmed that the technical phase of the work is now beginning in earnest.
