U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has issued an emergency order to address reliability concerns on the Mid-Atlantic electrical grid. The order directs PJM Interconnection L.L.C., in coordination with Constellation Energy Corporation, to ensure Units 3 and 4 of the Eddystone Generating Station in Pennsylvania remain operational beyond their original shutdown date of May 31, 2025.
The directive, effective from August 23 to November 20, 2026, also requires the use of economic dispatch to minimize consumer costs during this period. Secretary Wright noted the importance of dependable power sources during peak demand, highlighting how coal, natural gas, and nuclear generation supported the region during recent heat waves.
This emergency order is part of the Department of Energy’s efforts to prevent a potential rise in power outages, as indicated by the DOE’s Resource Adequacy Report, which warns of increased risks by 2030 if reliable power plants retire.
