First Lady Melania Trump outlined her vision for institutional design as a means to preserve America’s story, describing the White House as an architectural autobiography that embodies ambition, democracy, and civic values through its design and craftsmanship. She noted that the building’s design involves intentional choices contributing to a larger narrative, weaving America’s ideals and stories into its fabric across generations.
Mrs. Trump's cited accomplishments include the award-winning White House Tennis Pavilion, renovation of the Queens’ Bedroom and Bathroom, conservation of the Zuber wall covering in the President’s Dining Room, and the 2020 restoration of the Rose Garden, which renewed historic design elements while improving infrastructure and accessibility. Additional preservation at the White House included work on the East Room floor, State Entrance and Hall marble floors, President’s Elevator, Bowling Alley, and Children’s Garden. She also emphasized historic preservation efforts at Camp David.
The First Lady emphasized that thoughtful design fosters collaboration, conveys dignity, inspires ambition, and creates a sense of belonging. She said these experiences within the White House contribute to national identity and asserted that great design shapes lived experiences, beyond mere aesthetics.
These remarks were delivered from the White House Rose Garden during the 2026 White House Historical Association Presidential Sites Summit, which convened over 200 leaders from presidential sites to reflect on the America 250 celebration and future preservation efforts.
