Afro-descendant youth from Latin America and the Caribbean gathered in Colón, Panama, to exchange experiences and develop proposals aimed at strengthening youth leadership and their influence on regional decisions. The meeting focused on identity, culture, rights, participation, and social justice, highlighting the aspirations and contributions of Afro-descendant youth in the region.
The event, held at the Colón Art and Culture Centre, was organized by the Government of Panama, the United Nations system, and the Colón Art and Culture Centre, with support from CAF – Development Bank of Latin America. It recognized the historical and cultural significance of Afro-descendant communities in Panama and throughout the region.
Over two days, delegates addressed topics including education, culture, human rights, political participation, innovation, social justice, and sustainable development, aiming for inclusive and representative societies free from discrimination.
The main result was the drafting of the Declaration of the Afro-Latin Caribbean Youth Congress, outlining priorities and recommendations to strengthen inclusion, participation, and recognition of Afro-descendant youth. This document will contribute to several regional and international forums in 2026, including the OAS General Assembly, United Nations General Assembly, and the UN Youth Forum.
Esther Kuisch Laroche, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Santiago and Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasized UNESCO's commitment to supporting the leadership of Afro-descendant youth and their full participation in building just, inclusive, and sustainable societies.
