World Aquatics is highlighting the importance of swimming and water safety with its Olympic Day theme, Let's Move, encouraging everyone to take the first step toward aquatic confidence, regardless of skill level. The organization notes that drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury deaths, especially in communities lacking access to water safety education.
To address this, World Aquatics launched Discover Water during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This global program targets children aged 6 to 12, aiming to teach essential water safety skills and promote safe movement in and around water. The initiative has expanded through trained national leaders and educators, with plans for further growth on additional continents.
Complementing Discover Water, the World Aquatics Foundation was established in 2025. It focuses on athlete development, drowning prevention and water safety, and the protection of water resources, aiming to provide enduring opportunities both within and beyond aquatic sports.
Earlier this year, the Foundation introduced its Emerging Leaders Programme, supporting young people aged 14 to 18 to become advocates for water safety, environmental responsibility, and community engagement through mentorship, education, and local projects.
While the Olympic Games are the pinnacle for elite athletes, World Aquatics emphasizes the wider aquatic community—including coaches, lifeguards, teachers, and millions who enjoy water activities—stressing that water unites everyone.
