Japan’s updated 2050 Weather Forecast initiative highlights potential climate impacts if current greenhouse gas emission trends continue. The campaign centers on a video projecting conditions in 2050, marked by extreme heat and its effects on daily life.
The forecast predicts that by 2050, up to 157 locations in Japan could experience "extreme heat days"—days reaching 40°C or higher. Such heat extremes have become more common and have already affected daily life, with recent reports of heat stroke deaths among animals at a Tokyo zoo.
Projected health measures to address the heat may include restricting outdoor activities, such as prohibiting children from playing outside and limiting construction work in open-air environments. The video also notes challenges to food production, citing concerns that a popular pork cutlet rice dish could become a luxury due to climate impacts.
The forecast also raises concerns about increasingly destructive super typhoons causing severe damage in Japan. To counter these risks, it emphasizes the need for faster adoption of renewable energy and electric vehicles as part of efforts toward a decarbonized society.
The initiative, supported by the UN in Japan, makes the updated video freely available for public use in response to calls for stronger action to reduce emissions and protect communities vulnerable to climate change impacts.
