The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) reports that over 434,000 hectares have burned across Europe so far this year, an increasingly predictable result of climate warming. Paola Deda, Director of UNECE’s Environment and Forests Division, emphasized that while emergency response is crucial, prevention and sustainable forest management offer the best opportunities to build resilience in landscapes and communities.

Significant forest destruction has occurred in France's Gironde region, where about 42,000 hectares of pine forest have burned, forcing tens of thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate. Spain has seen more than 200,000 hectares burned—nearly double its historical average—making this one of its worst wildfire seasons in decades. The wildfire crisis is reportedly moving eastward in Europe, with Greece and Italy facing increasing risks due to ongoing heat, drought, and strong winds.

In North America, the United States has reported around 1,849,000 hectares burned, while Canada has experienced over 4,000 wildfires consuming 3,770,000 hectares, with many large fires still uncontained. Wildfires not only destroy forests but also threaten homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods, forcing rapid evacuations of entire communities. Additionally, smoke emissions can affect air quality over vast distances, posing health risks.

The European Union estimates that wildfires cost approximately 2.5 billion Euros annually due to infrastructure damage, lost tourism revenue, and broader economic disruptions. Beyond immediate damage, affected communities face ongoing challenges such as ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, reduced agricultural productivity, health effects, and costly restoration efforts.

Human activity is the leading cause of wildfires, responsible for about nine out of ten incidents through negligence or deliberate acts. This highlights a strong potential for prevention through public awareness, regulatory measures, temporary fire restrictions during high-risk periods, and responsible behavior in natural areas. Furthermore, climate change intensifies wildfire severity by increasing temperatures, prolonging droughts, intensifying heatwaves, and altering rainfall patterns.
