Decades of expanding space activity have created a significant environmental footprint, with each launch contributing to space debris. Jason Jabbour, Senior Officer at the UN Environment Programme, stresses that early consideration of sustainability in space programmes is vital for understanding and mitigating long-term impacts.

An estimated 140 million pieces of space debris larger than one millimetre orbit Earth. While most pieces are too small to track, they still threaten satellites and spacecraft. The debris includes defunct satellites and rocket sections, some of which remain in orbit for years before fragmenting or falling back to Earth.

As these objects re-enter the atmosphere, metals such as aluminium, lithium, and copper are released. Scientists are examining whether these emissions could affect atmospheric chemistry, cloud formation, and the ozone layer. Smaller mission-related items, like bolts and lens caps, add to orbital congestion, and ongoing collisions generate microscopic particles that may increase night sky brightness.

Most spacecraft burn up on re-entry, but larger heat-resistant components can reach Earth’s surface, posing risks to people, infrastructure, and marine life. This concern accompanies rising interest in lunar exploration, which the UN highlights on International Moon Day to showcase the Moon’s importance and the environmental challenges of space activity.

The Moon’s gravitational influence sustains Earth’s ecosystems by generating tides that oxygenate coastal waters and transport nutrients, supporting marine environments such as the Great Barrier Reef. Studying the Moon also offers insights into the solar system’s origins and evolution as lunar exploration progresses.
