World Football Day, celebrated annually on 25 May, commemorates the first international football tournament during the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. Established by a UN General Assembly resolution in 2024, it honors football's capacity to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
UEFA, a founding member of the UN’s Football for the Goals initiative, reaffirmed its commitment to using football for positive change beyond the pitch, embedding sustainability and accessibility into its competitions and events.
UEFA updated its Strength Through Unity sustainability strategy, first launched in 2021, to provide a clear framework for national associations, leagues, and clubs to advance sustainability, supported by workshops, guidelines, and funding programmes.
Social impact initiatives include the Unity EURO Cup, organized with the UNHCR, bringing together refugee and host community teams across Europe to promote connection and belonging, as well as the inaugural Walking Football EURO Cup to keep older players active and socially connected.
Additionally, UEFA’s Take Care programme offers resources to help young people improve health-related behaviours in physical activity, nutrition, mental health, digital addiction, substance awareness, and road safety.
