U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has issued an emergency order under Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act to reduce power outage risks and strengthen grid reliability in the Mid-Atlantic region. The order allows PJM Interconnection, L.L.C., in coordination with Talen Energy Corporation, to continue operating Unit 4 at the Wagner Generating Station in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, past its usual operational limit to meet expected electricity demand.

PJM requested this order, stating it may need Unit 4 during periods of high electricity demand to keep the grid reliable. Secretary Wright noted that energy shortfalls affecting 65 million Americans are unacceptable and expressed confidence that this order will help ensure affordable, reliable, and secure energy supply, regardless of renewable availability.

Secretary Wright previously approved similar requests to extend Wagner Unit 4's operation, which PJM used during high temperatures earlier in the summer, utilizing the unit's remaining operating hours. PJM has indicated ongoing need for the unit to address rising electricity demand and prevent outages.

The emergency order is effective from August 20, 2026, through November 17, 2026.
