The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued an emergency order to ensure electricity reliability across 17 states during an energy emergency caused by extreme heat. The order directs the Southwest Power Pool, Inc. (SPP) to dispatch specified generation units as needed to keep the grid stable.
The order also authorizes SPP to activate backup generation resources as a last resort before or during an Energy Emergency Alert level 3. It is effective from July 26, 2026, until 11:59 PM CDT on August 3, 2026.
The DOE estimates that more than 35 gigawatts of unused backup power capacity is available nationwide, which the order will leverage to maintain affordable and reliable energy. This action seeks to prevent power outages, which cost Americans an estimated $44 billion annually according to DOE data.
Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated the order reflects a move to strengthen grid resilience. The administration aims to ensure ongoing access to reliable power for homes and businesses during this high demand period.
