The Ebola outbreak in central Africa remains active and highly concerning, with nearly 1,000 confirmed cases reported across 31 health zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Additionally, 19 cases have been identified in Kampala, Uganda, highlighting the outbreak's scale and seriousness.
The CDC reports that Ebola spreads through direct contact with the body fluids of infected persons, including those who have died from the disease. It does not transmit through the air like measles or influenza.
The CDC is working closely with federal and international partners to support response efforts aimed at slowing and ultimately stopping Ebola transmission in the region. Modeling studies published by the CDC emphasize the need for immediate support to manage the outbreak and prevent further spread.
This remains the third largest Ebola outbreak on record globally and is the 17th outbreak identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
