In a recent Security Council session, a senior UN official updated members on Syria’s transition following nearly 14 years of civil war, which caused at least 580,000 deaths and widespread displacement. Opposition groups ousted President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in 2024, ending the conflict and starting reconstruction under interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The transitional government is now working to integrate former opposition fighters into the Syrian military.

Despite some political progress, security concerns persist as Israel continues airstrikes and occupies the demilitarised buffer zone in southwestern Syria. Humanitarian needs remain severe, with about 15.6 million people—around two-thirds of Syria’s population—requiring aid, and 5.5 million displaced within the country.

The UN official stressed that international assistance is essential to address the remaining challenges in Syria’s recovery and transition.
