The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting to address the surge in deadly gang violence in Haiti, referencing a recent incident on 23 August in Kenscoff, near Port-au-Prince, where at least 47 people were killed, 22 injured, and more than 52 kidnapped.
According to the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), from 1 April to 30 June, gang-related violence caused 1,408 deaths, 656 injuries, and 326 cases of sexual violence.
The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) reported ongoing illicit flows of firearms and ammunition into Haiti, including a gang showcasing a new shipment of weapons despite a UN arms embargo imposed since 2022.
In response, the Security Council authorized a multinational security support mission in 2023 and approved a new gang suppression force in 2025 to help restore security and stability in the country.
