Intense fighting between the national army and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement militia in Jonglei State, particularly in Akobo County, has displaced approximately 140,000 people in that area alone. Since December, over 300,000 individuals have been uprooted across Jonglei and nearby states, contributing to nearly two million internally displaced people in South Sudan. Additionally, about 100,000 have crossed into Ethiopia seeking safety, though movements remain fluid as thousands have returned home in recent weeks. Returning families often find homes destroyed or looted, forcing them to take refuge in unfinished buildings or makeshift shelters constructed from sticks and plastic sheeting. Humanitarian access remains limited, leaving vulnerable populations without critical aid as the approaching rainy season threatens flooding in the world’s youngest nation, which has faced repeated conflict and climate shocks since its 2011 independence.

Meanwhile, global production of animal-based foods such as poultry, eggs, and pork has grown significantly over the past six decades. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, poultry meat production has increased nearly five-fold since 1961, while egg and pig meat production have almost doubled. In 2022, global meat production reached 361 million tonnes, up from approximately 71 million tonnes in 1961. Milk production also rose from around 342 million tonnes to 930 million tonnes, and egg production increased from 15 million tonnes to 94 million tonnes during the same period.

However, disparities remain in per capita land animal product supply, which is highest in Northern America, but relatively limited in Asia and largely stagnant in sub-Saharan Africa except for some gains in countries like Kenya and South Africa. Food loss and waste continue to undermine food security and sustainability, with about one-third of all food produced globally not consumed. Approximately 14 percent of animal food products are lost or wasted, often due to inadequate cold chain infrastructure and poor temperature control.
