At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the evolving multipolar nature of the world and called for strengthening this trend as the foundation for justice and effective multilateralism in global governance.
Guterres noted that current global institutions often reflect the geopolitical landscape of 1945 and urged reforms within multilateral bodies, including the United Nations and the Bretton Woods system, to improve representation and influence of developing countries for a fairer world order.
He also underscored the SCO as a key UN partner and identified four priority areas for enhanced cooperation, beginning with global security.
Expressing concern about instability in the Middle East, he called for maximum restraint, respect for ceasefires, and adherence to international law. He stressed the need for a peaceful and lasting settlement to restore regional stability while protecting international navigational rights, specifically referencing the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab.
On Gaza, the Secretary-General emphasized the importance of respecting the ceasefire and fully implementing the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict, while demanding the removal of obstacles to humanitarian aid. He also renewed his call to end settler attacks and settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank.
Concluding on the Israel-Palestine situation, Guterres reaffirmed that peace can only be secured through a two-State solution, envisioning Israel and Palestine as independent, sovereign, democratic states coexisting peacefully, with Jerusalem/Al Quds as their shared capital.
