Since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in 2021, living conditions have deteriorated, with millions in poverty and frequent human rights violations, according to the UN Human Rights Office.

Women and girls are especially impacted, with over two million denied access to secondary and higher education since 2021.

Both women and men have been arrested by the Taliban’s Office for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, primarily for alleged breaches of strict dress codes, beard length regulations, and bans on playing or listening to music.

Media freedom has also been restricted, with censorship, temporary closures of outlets, and arrests of journalists reported under the de facto authorities.

The UN reported that at least 449 men and women were subjected to corporal punishment in the first half of the year under Taliban rule.
