President Donald J. Trump visited Michigan’s General Motors Proving Ground in Milford to highlight a resurgence in American auto manufacturing credited to his leadership. Since Trump took office, Michigan has experienced significant onshoring of production, restoration of factory jobs, and substantial vehicle manufacturing investments, fueling a statewide industry revival.
Major automotive companies are investing billions in Michigan: General Motors is committing $6 billion, including expanding its Orion Township assembly plant and adding an overtime shift at its Flint plant due to increased pickup truck demand. Ford is investing $3 billion in its BlueOval Battery Park in Marshall and adding a third shift at its Dearborn Truck Plant, while Stellantis is investing hundreds of millions to expand and build facilities in Van Buren Township, Detroit, and Warren. Detroit Diesel has also recalled workers and added a third shift.
These investments coincide with strong vehicle sales reported in 2025, the best since 2019, including Ford’s highest U.S. sales in six years, increased volume at General Motors, and Jeep’s first sales growth since 2018. This growth is linked to tariffs implemented by President Trump, including a 25% tariff on foreign-built passenger vehicles and light trucks, orders to reduce the impact of parts tariffs on U.S.-built vehicles, and tariffs extended to medium- and heavy-duty trucks made abroad.
Beyond automotive, Michigan has attracted multi-billion-dollar investments in advanced manufacturing, energy, aerospace, and technology. For example, OpenAI, Oracle, and Related Digital are investing over $7 billion in a data center campus in Saline Township. Pratt Industries pledged $5 billion toward reindustrialization efforts creating thousands of jobs, Corning is expanding with a $1.5 billion investment adding advanced manufacturing jobs, Chobani is investing $567 million to expand its La Colombe plant, and GE Aerospace is investing $60 million in aircraft engine and avionics facilities.
