Edward Thorpe and Joseph Tomblin won gold in the Mixed Duet event, scoring 227.1317 points—an improvement over their previous World Cup victory in Medellin, Colombia, where they achieved 202.9517 points. This marks Britain’s first major Mixed Duet title at the World Championship level.
Their routine, themed on 'light and darkness,' included choreography partly by USA artistic swimmer Bill May. Thorpe and Tomblin aim to refine their performance for a higher artistic impression and look to further boost their score at upcoming competitions such as the European Championships.
Joining the British pair on the podium were two duets from Kazakhstan: Yasmina Islamova and Aldiyar Ramazanov took silver with 211.2559 points, while Artur Maidanov and Aiganym Saim earned bronze with 211.1392 points. Both Kazakh teams shared their satisfaction and their intent to improve in future events.
In addition to the Mixed Duet gold, Joseph Tomblin also secured silver in the Men’s Solo Free final, placing second to China’s Guo Muye, who won with 263.2338 points. Guo also helped China win the Open Team technical event and noted that participating in multiple events increased his confidence.
