The World Athletics Council has selected Beijing, China, to host the 2027 World Athletics Championships. This decision was confirmed at the 234th World Athletics Council Meeting in Glasgow ahead of the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships.
Beijing last hosted the World Athletics Championships in 2015 and the Olympic Games nearly two decades ago. Top athletes will return to the National Stadium 12 years after the previous event.
China is also set to host the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, highlighting the country's growing role in global athletics.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe emphasized China's significance as a major sports market, noting its leading position in Wanda Diamond League broadcast consumption in 2023 with an audience of 368.9 million. He underscored the opportunity to expand the sport's fan base in China, one of the largest commercial markets worldwide.
The last four World Athletics Championships have been awarded to cities in the world's four largest economies: the USA (Oregon), the EU (Budapest), Japan (Tokyo), and now China (Beijing).
Representatives from Chinese athletics expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to prepare a high-quality championship that supports the global development of athletics. Beijing officials highlighted the city's unique status as the first to host both Summer and Winter Olympic Games and expressed anticipation for the event's return.
