Aidan Murphy won gold in the 400m at the Oceania Championships in Darwin, setting a championship record of 44.44 seconds—the second fastest ever by an Oceanian athlete. He lowered the previous record by 1.40 seconds. Luke van Ratingen, the former record holder, finished third in 45.04 seconds, with Thomas Reynolds second in 44.69 seconds.
Two days later, Murphy took the 200m heat in 20.28 seconds, breaking the championship record, and won the final with 20.05 seconds. This marked a rapid improvement since 2022, when his personal bests were 20.41 in the 200m and 45.97 in the 400m. Earlier this year, he had set new bests of 19.88 in the 200m, under 45 seconds in the 400m, and 10.23 in the 100m.
Murphy also anchored Australia's 4x400m relay at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, finishing third with a time of 2:55.20—the fourth-fastest nation in history for the event—with a 43.79-second split on the anchor leg.
Other highlights included Zoe Hobbs of New Zealand setting a new women’s 100m championship record at 11.00 seconds, and Cameron McEntyre becoming the first to exceed 80 metres in men’s javelin at the championships.
Murphy expressed satisfaction with his performances and optimism about breaking the national record soon.
