The National Institutes of Health (NIH) specifies standard due dates for grant applications based on the activity code and application type. Applications and related documents must be submitted by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization on the designated due date.

Different activity codes have recurring due dates, typically three times per year. For example, research project grants under the R01 code for new applications have deadlines on February 5, June 5, and October 5 each year. Renewal or resubmission R01 applications are due later—on March 5 and July 5—with no October deadline. Other activity codes such as P01, R18, and T series have due dates on January 25, May 25, and September 25.

Renewal, resubmission, and revision applications often have different due dates than new applications. Additionally, R01, R21, and R34 applications with a principal investigator appointed to an NIH Peer Review advisory group may be eligible for an alternate submission schedule, which should be reviewed in detail.

Applicants are encouraged to check opportunity-specific guidance and consult the relevant Institute or Center (IC) since some ICs may not accept certain applications for all cycles or due dates. Questions about a specific funding opportunity should be directed to the IC contact listed in the funding announcement.
