The Republic of Latvia signed the Artemis Accords during a ceremony at NASA headquarters in Washington, becoming the 62nd nation committed to responsible space exploration, NASA announced.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated that Latvia’s addition strengthens a coalition dedicated to transparent and peaceful space activities, forming the foundation for cooperation on lunar missions.
Latvia’s Minister for Education and Science, Dace Melbārde, signed the accords, highlighting the country's commitment to international cooperation and the development of its space industry, research, and education sectors.
The event included participation from the chargé d’affaires a.i. at the Latvian Embassy and the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, emphasizing the diplomatic support behind the agreement.
The Artemis Accords, initiated by the U.S. in 2020 with seven founding nations, establish practical principles to enhance safety and coordination among countries exploring the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Over 40 nations from six continents attended the ceremony, representing more than two-thirds of current signatories and signaling broad international interest in sustainable lunar activities.
