Officials including U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Pipeline, which will deliver natural gas from Pennsylvania to New York City and Long Island, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
The project, operated by Williams Companies, will expand the existing Transco pipeline system, adding 400,000 dekatherms per day of capacity—enough to serve about 2.3 million homes. The pipeline is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2027.
Permitting was secured with the support of President Trump and the National Energy Dominance Council, working with New York and New Jersey officials last fall, according to the statement. Project leaders highlighted the pipeline as key to lowering energy costs and providing reliable, clean-burning natural gas to the region.
Energy Secretary Wright noted past political decisions delayed energy infrastructure development and increased costs, emphasizing ongoing efforts to build more infrastructure for affordable and reliable American energy. EPA Administrator Zeldin described the project as a significant step toward reliable and affordable natural gas for millions in New York, crediting President Trump and his council for securing the permits. Secretary Burgum described the project as part of reversing previous policies that compromised energy and national security, supporting American energy dominance and cost reductions.
