Myanmar's former President Win Myint was released from jail after being detained since February 2021, when the military overthrew the country's democratically elected government, sparking widespread protests and armed resistance. Other senior officials, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, remain in detention, according to UN sources.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres acknowledged the announced amnesty measures, which include prisoner releases, reduced sentences, and commutations of death penalties to life imprisonment. He stressed the need for meaningful actions to ensure the prompt release of all those arbitrarily held, including Aung San Suu Kyi, and called for conditions to enable a credible political process. Guterres also encouraged ongoing dialogue among all stakeholders, with his Special Envoy Julie Bishop supporting peaceful solutions alongside ASEAN regional partners.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, welcomed the long-awaited release of President Win Myint and other prisoners. He emphasized that all persons detained unjustly since the coup, including Aung San Suu Kyi, should be released immediately and unconditionally. Turk also called for an end to the ongoing violence affecting Myanmar’s population.
