Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo participated in a Kids’ Athletics Day event with local children in Gaborone, Botswana, ahead of the Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26. The session introduced children to athletics through games, movement-based activities, and relay-inspired challenges, leading up to the relay competition at the National Stadium.
Organized in partnership with the Botswana Athletics Association, the event was part of the build-up to the World Athletics Relays and launched a global month-long celebration of Kids’ Athletics Day. Tebogo, a Kids’ Athletics ambassador, encouraged children to enjoy sport, stay active, and pursue their dreams despite limited resources.
Kids’ Athletics is World Athletics’ flagship participation programme, focused on developing fundamental movement and athletics skills in a safe and inclusive environment. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has said the programme is crucial for physical literacy, providing essential skills for participation in a variety of sports.
Kids’ Athletics Day is observed each year on 7 May to promote movement, learning, inclusion, sustainability, and community among children globally. Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has reached an estimated 1.3 million children across schools, clubs, and communities. This year, World Athletics celebrates five years of Kids’ Athletics Day with a month-long campaign throughout May.
