In 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported ten cases of locally acquired mosquito-transmitted malaria in the United States. These cases appeared across four states and represent the first such incidents in nearly 20 years.

Although malaria transmission was eliminated in the United States in the early 1950s, these recent reports show that the country remains vulnerable to malaria reintroduction via mosquitoes.

The CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report noted that these cases highlight ongoing concerns about the potential for malaria transmission despite its historical elimination in the US.
