Inna, a consultant rheumatologist from Kharkiv, Ukraine, lost her home and career when Russian forces launched a full-scale invasion. She fled with her family and cat, traveling over 26 hours through Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, and ultimately arriving in the United Kingdom in May 2022 via the Homes for Ukraine scheme, which sponsors Ukrainians seeking safety.
Upon arrival, Inna faced challenges including language barriers and the non-recognition of her medical qualifications. She began working in an administrative role with the Lewisham and Greenwich Trust of the National Health Service (NHS) in Southeast London. Support from NHS colleagues helped her improve her English, build confidence, and prepare for the required examinations to practice medicine in the UK.
With encouragement from colleagues, Inna passed all the necessary exams and returned to her specialty in rheumatology. Her experience highlights the challenges and opportunities for skilled refugees to contribute when given support and access to resources.
