The International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) Council has launched a special funding call for Latin America and the Caribbean during its 11th session on 10 and 30 March 2026. This initiative aims to strengthen regional scientific cooperation, capacity-building, and sustainable development in geosciences. Jointly funded by UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) with a budget of USD 150,000, the program follows IGCP project criteria.

This call builds on the precedent set by a 2025 special call for Africa, which drew over 300 expressions of interest from 45 countries. From that process, three projects were selected for funding of up to USD 50,000 annually for three years, focusing on groundwater, mineral resources, and climate change connected to UNESCO Global Geoparks in Africa.

The current funding opportunity supports internationally relevant geoscience research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and capacity-building efforts in the Latin American and Caribbean region, in line with ongoing UNESCO and IUGS priorities.
