The Cliff of Bandiagara in Mali, known as the Land of the Dogons and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1989, is a unique cultural landscape shaped by local communities through their traditions and architectural heritage.

Since 2019, ongoing violence in the Mopti region has severely damaged the site, destroying villages and undermining the area’s social fabric.

In response, UNESCO, in partnership with the Government of Mali and with financial support from the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH), launched a 2021 project to reconstruct elements of the built heritage, strengthen local capacities, and safeguard cultural heritage at the Cliff of Bandiagara.
