Severe drought in the southeastern U.S. has fueled two large wildfires in southern Georgia, burning over 50,000 acres as of April 28, 2026. The Pineland Road and Highway 82 fires have impacted areas near Atkinson and Fruitland.
According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, these fires have destroyed more than 120 homes—the highest home loss from wildfires in Georgia history. The Highway 82 fire began on April 18 from a welding spark, while the Pineland Road fire ignited three days later after a mylar balloon struck power lines. Dry, windy conditions accelerated both fires' spread after months of limited rainfall.
Forestry officials said debris from Hurricane Helene in September 2024 further fueled the fires. As of April 28, the Pineland Road fire was 23 percent contained; the Highway 82 fire was 32 percent contained. Hundreds of firefighters are working on the blazes using ground and aerial equipment. Recent heavy rains have aided firefighting efforts.
NASA satellites, including Landsat 8, have provided imagery showing the extent of the fires and their effects on forests and communities. NASA's data supports global wildfire tracking and operational management through tools like the Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) and the Fire Event Explorer.
