World Athletics, Sapienza University of Rome, and the organisers of Acea Run Rome The Marathon conducted an integrated atmospheric and air quality monitoring campaign during the World Athletics Elite Label road race in March. The initiative combined static monitoring at the finish line with dynamic measurements along the racecourse, aiming to capture both fixed and in-motion air quality conditions during race operations.

Monitoring occurred on race day and in the preceding days. Static systems were positioned to establish baseline air quality conditions for comparison with the exposure experienced on race day. This effort was part of the BAQUNIN project, funded by the European Space Agency and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, situating the campaign within a broader framework of environmental observation and research.

To ensure comprehensive spatial coverage, a network of fixed sensors was deployed at selected points along the marathon route, complemented by mobile monitoring devices installed on official vehicles. The combined use of static and mobile platforms enabled the collection of spatial and temporal variations in air quality across the event footprint. Sensors measured particulate matter, gaseous pollutants, and meteorological variables, generating a dataset intended to support operational understanding and future scientific analysis.

The campaign aimed to enhance understanding of the environmental conditions experienced by athletes, staff, spectators, and the broader urban environment during a major sports event. The data collected will undergo further analysis and may inform future work on physical activity and air quality in urban settings, as well as strategies for health protection and risk communication at large events. This project reflects World Athletics' commitment to environmental responsibility and evidence-based risk management in sport, highlighting the potential for innovation and inter-institutional collaboration at major events.
