The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) projects that global material use will significantly increase, potentially doubling environmental impacts by 2060 compared to 2015 levels. These impacts include acidification, climate change, eutrophication, land use change, and various forms of ecotoxicity affecting water, humans, and terrestrial systems.
According to the OECD, most global environmental effects linked to material consumption are expected to at least double in this period. The sectors managing these materials contribute the majority of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.
Waste generated from current production and consumption patterns is also expected to rise, further increasing environmental challenges.
